On April 17, 2026, a team from SCCB led by Dr. Zhang Peng visited the Shanghai Yimin Fruit & Vegetable Cooperative to launch an edible cassava demonstration planting project. This collaboration marks a significant step in translating our cassava research into real-world applications and supporting the development of urban agriculture in Shanghai.
Hands-On Guidance for First-Time Growers
Recognizing that this was the cooperative's first experience with cassava cultivation, our team provided comprehensive training covering stem preparation, planting techniques, and field management. Dr. Zhang Peng delivered an in-depth briefing on cassava's physiological characteristics and critical cultivation practices—including ridge formation, stem soaking protocols, cutting methods, and fertilization strategies. Dr. Ma Qiuxiang, a key researcher at our center, followed up with live demonstrations and patiently addressed questions from the farmers. The session sparked lively engagement, with growers showing genuine enthusiasm for this new crop.
From Farm to Family Fun
The cooperative's leadership then shared their vision for integrating cassava into Shanghai's urban agriculture scene. The discussion explored creative applications ranging from traditional cassava sweet soup to interactive "harvest your own cassava" family activities designed to connect city dwellers with farming. Both parties agreed to establish the cooperative as a showcase site to gradually build public awareness and appreciation for edible cassava among Shanghai residents.
A New Chapter for Urban Agriculture
This successful demonstration planting not only adds an exciting new dimension to Shanghai's urban agriculture landscape but also strengthens cassava's visibility and industry impact. It represents a solid first step toward wider promotion of edible cassava in the region. Moving forward, the Shanghai Cassava Tech Center will continue leveraging its expertise in molecular breeding and cultivation technologies to drive cassava industry growth across the Yangtze River Delta.
