How to Tackle the New Cassava Disease? National Experts Offer Solutions in Hepu, Guangxi

[2026-09-24]

On September 21, 2026, a unique "field consultation" unfolded in Hepu County, Guangxi. The "Sri Lankan Cassava Mosaic Disease Prevention and Control Technology Field Demonstration and Symposium," jointly organized by the scientists of Disease Control and Breeding Technique & Method and the Agency of Beihai Station, the Chinese Characteristic Tropical Crops Agro-technology Research System, as well as the local teams from Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was successfully held. Over 90 participants from local agricultural authorities, system experts, enterprise representatives, and large-scale farmers gathered to review the progress of this battle against the emerging disease.

At the field demonstration base, experts systematically demonstrated key prevention and control technologies, including disease monitoring and diagnosis, vector whitefly control, healthy stem supply, and precision drone spraying, while showcasing the practical effectiveness of green integrated control solutions. Participants also observed the disease and stress resistance performance of 47 special cassava germplasm resources in the field, engaging in in-depth discussions on efficient selection, precise evaluation, and disease-resistant breeding. As the Breeding Techniques Post, we recognize that developing disease-resistant varieties is fundamental to prevention and control—every germplasm screening and evaluation bears the responsibility of safeguarding industrial security.

At the symposium, experts and representatives exchanged views on improving monitoring and early warning systems, joint research on disease-resistant breeding, healthy stem propagation, and cross-regional coordinated prevention and control, while identifying current production challenges. All agreed to leverage the system's advantages of "multi-post coordination and cross-regional collaboration" to strengthen epidemic monitoring networks, accelerate joint breeding research and virus-free healthy stem propagation, and promote large-scale application of mature integrated control technologies. The Breeding Techniques Post will continue working at the research forefront, accelerating the development of disease-resistant varieties to provide sustained scientific support for the healthy development of the cassava industry.
